ᴀᴘᴘʟɪᴄᴀᴛɪᴏɴs

(applications are closed.)
opening october 8th at 00:01 GMT-8.
closing october 14th at 23:59 GMT-8.

SO, you've read the F.A.Q., the rules, checked that the character you're interested in is free and not reserved, and now you're ready to apply? Great! We're ready to accept you! The application description is below, and the form is ready for your copypasta convenience just underneath it! Please submit all applications in comments to this post with the subject "chara name | series". Have a seat, and drink some tea. We'll get right to you!

At this time, we do NOT allow application challenges. Sorry about that! It's all first-come, first-serve. You can apply for TWO (2) characters per round, with a maximum of SIX (6) characters allowed altogether.

RESERVES are not necessary. We run on a first-come, first-served system, but if you reserve your place is guaranteed for apps.

REQUESTS will always be as clear as possible on what we believe was lacking and expect to see written into the application, but feel free to ask for clarification and we'll reply as soon as possible. You have seventy-two (72) hours to revise, or your application will be revoked. Although you're more than welcome to ask for an extension if for some reason you're unable to complete in time, within reason.

REJECTIONS will also have clearly-stated reasons, and you'll be more than welcome to re-apply next month. However, we ask that if you're rejected three times in a row, you please try your hand at another character.

WHEN ACCEPTED, please read and follow the directions in the welcome copypasta closely! We don't ask for a terrible amount, but we do note that some things are mandatory for the game and it helps greatly with organization!

DID YOU PLAY IN HOLYRELIC BEFORE? We have a special rule for that! If you're repicking a character you had in HR before we closed previously, we're upholding our promise that your character can come back with their memories, THREE (3) event items of your choosing, and half of their levels. (I.E: Gauche was level 42 thereabouts, he'll be 21 to start.) Just comment to the apps with an updated player/character section to reclaim! No need for samples. :)

Applications can be screened for privacy after they've been judged, so please add a note if you'd like it screened.

E-MAIL: Your e-mail for mod contact records!
PLURK&MESSENGER(S): [plurk.com profile] orhaldi & AIM is preferred as the most popular form of contact, but others can be listed here as well!
CHARACTERS PLAYED: Characters you currently play in [community profile] holyrelic!

character.
CHARACTER NAME: Your character's name.
SERIES: The series your character is from; anime, manga, book, television, video game, you name it! Just give us a link.
CANON POINT: The point in time that your character is being applied from.
APPEARANCE: A link to an image, and/or an optional description if there's anything not covered in the image.
DESIRED CLASS & REASONING: The class you'd like your character to be! We ask that you follow any canon inclination towards fighting types and state what they were previously, but if your character is someone that has never held a sword before, never took karate, and comes from a regular world with no magic, please provide a brief reasoning as to why you've picked what class you did!
PREVIOUSLY IN HOLYRELIC: ONLY FOR PLAYERS FROM HR'S LAST INCARNATION! Please note what their halved level will be and the three event items you'd like to keep. :) (if this doesn't apply to you-- 98% of you-- just remove this line. ♥)

PERSONALITY: Your character's personality; this needs to be written by you, though! We'd like at least two solid paragraphs, although three would be great!

samples.
FIRST-PERSON SAMPLE: A first-person sample-- or a journal/action post-- in the game's context. Anything you might use as a post in the game would be just fine here, but you don't need to use what you put in your application as your first post! Please do keep in mind that while journal posts are more natural to write for samples, we have no network in The World-- everything is face to face. All entries to the main community will be action posts! :)

THIRD-PERSON SAMPLE: A third-person sample-- or log style-- that accurately displays your character's personality and motivations. Setting doesn't matter! We just ask that you please not write a sample about your character first arriving, because it greatly limits their usual personality and reactions. We aren't too particular about length but please write at least two or three paragraphs so we have something to work with! Also, if you've previously been accepted with another character and you're currently in the game, you do NOT need to write a third-person sample!

CHARACTER NAME: Misaki Mei
SERIES: Another (Novel)
CANON POINT: Ch. 15 -- After they find out about the fire and she runs off to warn everyone/pull the fire alarm
APPEARANCE: Petite, slender and very pale; often compared to a doll. Dark hair worn in a short bob. Right eye is natural and black. Left eye is a false eye -- called a 'doll's eye', likely glass -- blue and often hidden behind an eyepatch. (Picture.)
DESIRED CLASS & REASONING: Shadow Warlock -- She's closely associated in canon with the occult and with death and darkness, etc., and isn't really the physically active type, so having her in a magic class seems pretty par for the course. Her solitary personality also doesn't seem appropriate for a party support role like Harvest Cleric or Macabre Dancer. Thusly.
PREVIOUSLY IN HOLYRELIC: N/A

PERSONALITY: Perhaps the best way to describe Mei is 'doll-like'. Not only does she look like one; her face hardly ever changes expression and her voice hardly ever changes pitch. She's a solitary creature, often seemingly passive, and very stoic and taciturn. Her classmates and even Sakakibara Kouichi, who gets to know her better than most, call her 'cold'. This coupled with her eyepatch, her last name and the fact that she lives in a doll gallery themed like a morgue means that it's not surprising she's considered strange and unapproachable. She has always had few friends, and dislikes being interrogated as well as being tied down by contact (she hates cell phones, for example). For all that, she's not exactly antisocial -- she just doesn't bother to reach out or present herself in a friendly way.

The person who's come closest to her, besides Sakakibara, is probably her twin sister Fujioka Misaki. They knew each other as cousins for a long time, but eventually both realized they were twins separated at a very young age. They didn't always get along perfectly, but Misaki is Mei's other half and her death was a deciding factor in Mei's meeting and interactions with Sakakibara. Also thanks to this and the phenomenon, Mei has fairly clear understanding of death and grief -- it is often sadness that colors the rare breaks in her composure. Although Mei does not consider herself all that close to the rest of her family, she is mature enough to understand their problems and not particularly resent her birth parents for sending her away nor her adopted parents for using her as a substitute. She also does stand by those important to her -- she would have happily given Misaki her own kidney for a transplant if her age and her adopted mother's unwillingness to let her have anything to do with her birth family hadn't gotten in the way. During the dining room scene on the class trip, it is only when the accusers go after Sakakibara that she acknowledges and even actively mocks their efforts.

As the above examples also show, Mei is not so perfect a wallflower as she seems. She does have a distinct -- if somewhat twisted -- sense of humor: she teases Sakakibara about his name's connection to a 1997 murder case, messes with Teshigawara about the identity of the 'dead' person, and often seems amused early on when Sakakibara, who doesn't know anything at the time, is freaking out about the possibility of her being either dead or nonexistent. Sometimes, she will even add fuel to the fire. As for her interests, she does have a certain fondness for dolls, drawing, walks in freezing winter rain, and skipping school, though the latter is largely a product of her nonexistence and the fact that as a result it's much more relaxing for both herself and the class if she isn't at school. She's certainly not stupid, considering what she reads in her spare time. Also, her preferred subjects are maths and sciences (perhaps surprising, considering her connections to the arts), rather than language and literature. She states that it is because she prefers subjects where only one answer is possible, but this seems more of a wishful product of how messy her own life is, rather than an actual worldview.

Overall, Mei could be said to be a very self-sufficient child. Her mother seems given to benign neglect in general, while her father is hardly ever home. She is not as bothered as a more social person would be by being treated as 'nonexistent' by her class and teachers, although she doesn't exactly welcome the position with open arms and doesn't put much stock by the charm -- both because she doesn't entirely believe in the phenomenon at first and because of Misaki's death in April. She tends to passively allow what happens to her for the most part (including the accusations in the dining room), although she does often make it clear this doesn't mean she accepts those actions or attitudes or their usefulness (or lack thereof). In other words, she does have a bit of a patronizing side that likely only worsens others' opinions of her. Her passiveness, too, is not perfect: once she makes the decision to finally use her ability to see the dead to eliminate the 'dead' one of the class for everyone's sake, she goes ahead and takes action -- all within a single day. This incongruously altruistic streak shows up sometimes: one of her rationalizations for accepting her 'nonexistence' was so that someone else (less suited than herself) would not have to be in that position.

Although Mei does finally take the initiative, she spent a long time in limbo about what to do with her ability. At first, this is understandable because although she can see the color of death, she cannot see or prevent accidental deaths, and even knowing who the 'dead' one was would have been futile because they would not know what to do afterwards. She has also spent most of her life avoiding her own ability, understandably, by hiding her eye behind the eyepatch. It is only when Sakakibara, Teshigawara and Mochizuki take action and find out, through the tape, a way to end the curse involving the 'dead' one that Mei, too, finally does what she must. Prior to that, she does investigate the curse with Chibiki-sensei, but thanks to her lack of connections with people (which was important to finding out about the tape), does not get very far. In other words, although her independence is one of Mei's strongest straits, it is also one of her biggest flaws.

FIRST-PERSON SAMPLE: Here! I hope linking to a test-drive thread is OK.

THIRD-PERSON SAMPLE: Closed Season's Two Wings.

Dwarfed by the temple washed-out under the sky sits a girl. She is barely distinguishable from the shadowed fancy ornamentation on the building, but perhaps that is because that is the way she wants it. Although she's sitting a little ways up the steps, a thin coating of raindrops glistens on the dark crown of her head.

Mei runs her fingers over the odd, outlandish contours of the hat she'd woken up in -- it is only a little stranger than the outfit. She doesn't mind being dressed up, particularly, especially when everyone else looks about as strange. Camouflage. Even more conveniently, they've given her a new cell phone that can control the weather.

(She's not, in fact, sure it's a cell phone at all, but Mei isn't the type to stop and quibble over small details. She would never get anywhere in life otherwise.)

... It's reassuring, after that, that the rain she'd thought to be cold doesn't meet her expectations. It is not a 'cell phone that can control the weather', but a 'cell phone that can locate weather and climate similar to those desired' -- you could think of it that way, especially after the experimentation she's done. It's much too roundabout a solution, though, and she abandons it almost as soon as it forms. It's a solution for those who are still mentally in a place they recognize. She moves on.

There are places here that stop you from advancing, like solid walls where you can see nothing at all. Gates that move you like magical mirrors. Many of the only recognizable words are the nonsensical strings on the 'cell phone'. Creatures that would only have a place on TV. Mei doesn't play many games, but there's an echo of recognition: she has a good memory and her single eye takes in a great deal. Her instinct is to piece it together -- even if that same instinct tries to reject what it comes up with.

Whatever this is, it's a game. She hasn't spoken to many people, but the way they act and the way they relate to each other has a hollowness to it, like walking dolls. It doesn't much make her want to get closer to them, in any case.

Her 'cell phone' flashes insistently. Mission. Mission. Mission. There is something she should do here. Instead, when Mei brings herself to her feet she goes in search of the smaller Gate. These places, at least, she can simply leave.
