(applications are closed.)
opening october 8th at 00:01 GMT-8.
closing october 14th at 23:59 GMT-8.

SO, you've read the F.A.Q., the rules, checked that the character you're interested in is free and not reserved, and now you're ready to apply? Great! We're ready to accept you! The application description is below, and the form is ready for your copypasta convenience just underneath it! Please submit all applications in comments to this post with the subject "chara name | series". Have a seat, and drink some tea. We'll get right to you!

At this time, we do NOT allow application challenges. Sorry about that! It's all first-come, first-serve. You can apply for TWO (2) characters per round, with a maximum of SIX (6) characters allowed altogether.

RESERVES are not necessary. We run on a first-come, first-served system, but if you reserve your place is guaranteed for apps.

REQUESTS will always be as clear as possible on what we believe was lacking and expect to see written into the application, but feel free to ask for clarification and we'll reply as soon as possible. You have seventy-two (72) hours to revise, or your application will be revoked. Although you're more than welcome to ask for an extension if for some reason you're unable to complete in time, within reason.

REJECTIONS will also have clearly-stated reasons, and you'll be more than welcome to re-apply next month. However, we ask that if you're rejected three times in a row, you please try your hand at another character.

WHEN ACCEPTED, please read and follow the directions in the welcome copypasta closely! We don't ask for a terrible amount, but we do note that some things are mandatory for the game and it helps greatly with organization!

DID YOU PLAY IN HOLYRELIC BEFORE? We have a special rule for that! If you're repicking a character you had in HR before we closed previously, we're upholding our promise that your character can come back with their memories, THREE (3) event items of your choosing, and half of their levels. (I.E: Gauche was level 42 thereabouts, he'll be 21 to start.) Just comment to the apps with an updated player/character section to reclaim! No need for samples. :)

Applications can be screened for privacy after they've been judged, so please add a note if you'd like it screened.

DESIRED CLASS & REASONING: The class you'd like your character to be! We ask that you follow any canon inclination towards fighting types and state what they were previously, but if your character is someone that has never held a sword before, never took karate, and comes from a regular world with no magic, please provide a brief reasoning as to why you've picked what class you did!
PREVIOUSLY IN HOLYRELIC: ONLY FOR PLAYERS FROM HR'S LAST INCARNATION! Please note what their halved level will be and the three event items you'd like to keep. :) (if this doesn't apply to you-- 98% of you-- just remove this line. ♥)

PERSONALITY: Your character's personality; this needs to be written by you, though! We'd like at least two solid paragraphs, although three would be great!

samples.
FIRST-PERSON SAMPLE: A first-person sample-- or a journal/action post-- in the game's context. Anything you might use as a post in the game would be just fine here, but you don't need to use what you put in your application as your first post! Please do keep in mind that while journal posts are more natural to write for samples, we have no network in The World-- everything is face to face. All entries to the main community will be action posts! :)

THIRD-PERSON SAMPLE: A third-person sample-- or log style-- that accurately displays your character's personality and motivations. Setting doesn't matter! We just ask that you please not write a sample about your character first arriving, because it greatly limits their usual personality and reactions. We aren't too particular about length but please write at least two or three paragraphs so we have something to work with! Also, if you've previously been accepted with another character and you're currently in the game, you do NOT need to write a third-person sample!

DESIRED CLASS & REASONING:

Tribal Grappler
Fighting style: Keeping a good eye on his targets, combining the best methods to succeed - and quickly - are tactics that aren't so different from his battle style. And though Red isn't a martial artist, it can be assumed that he wouldn't be afraid to try something hand-to-hand. Or much of anything that may seem better done at a distance. Having his pokemon cut away a tree, shove a boulder away... not a huge sense of distance with this one.
Weapons: Red's almost always seen wearing a pair of fingerless gloves. It can suggest a preference for being free to touch things, and a hands-on personality. A weapon that needs to be held one way or another wouldn't be the end of the world, but may slow him down. He won't even hold a fishing pole for long if he doesn't have to. So gauntlets, he'd like! As long as they're light.
HP & Defense: Something must have made it possible for Red to last so long on Mt. Silver. What exactly, who knows - but it takes a long time for him to run out of steam. That being said, what number of actual hits Red could take probably isn't many? Not exactly a tank.
Speed: Red's build is fairly light, and his clothes allow him to get around with little bulk. He doesn't even wear a coat in an ice cave. And if need be, yes, he can always run.

PERSONALITY:
As a player character, Red's individuality isn't immediately obvious, given that he's got almost no dialogue apart from thoughts on things he observes, like signs. The best clues come from his relationships with NPCs, and the story itself.

Red is only eleven years old when he leaves his hometown: quiet, rural Palette. He's a curious boy then, a good child loved by his mother. His best friend until then is Green Oak, the neighbor boy who eventually becomes so cocky and absorbed in becoming a trainer that their friendship turns into a rivalry. Prior to this it seems Red is content enough playing video games at home, but a visit to Professor Oak's lab changes everything.

He's introduced to what would become his own first pokemon, a Pikachu, for an errand. Initially, they're paired up simply for safety, since it's dangerous to travel without a pokemon at your side, while wild ones run about in the grass. Red handles a trip from Palette to the neighboring Viridian City so well, the professor's sees potential in him as much as his own grandson. Both Red and Green receive their own Pokedexes and the challenge of collecting data on as many pokemon as they can find. Though it's not the only goal of their journeys, they're out to make names for themselves competitively, too.

Separately, they travel all across Kanto, Green usually a step ahead wherever Red goes. Though being in second place for long doesn't mean he's as much of a loser as Green likes to tease. As he makes his way from town to town and gym to gym, he's fast to surprise everyone. The reputation of a kid turned powerhouse spreads like wildfire as he sweeps through the battle scene, but no one ever seems to know what to expect when they actually meet him. There is a hint of mischief in him, clear in a silent, knowing smile. Otherwise he's unassuming, rare to give his name even by the time he's gone. After successful battles his opponents always have something to say, calling him things such as a "child prodigy", "rough", "skilled", "feisty", and "spirited", just to name a few. The variety of these descriptions hint at an ability to adapt to any sort of battle.

He's also been told, "You mix brawn with brains". Part of what keeps him on top with things is that Red actually talks to a lot of people. He's definitely an information gatherer - provided there's something he needs to know. He's unafraid to approach someone or investigate objects and features around him when he finds himself in an unfamiliar setting. It's resulted in many things, from being given gifts that help him along in his travels, to simply being told to get lost. The latter only makes him investigate more, usually.

More than once he's been shooed away for poking his nose where someone doesn't want him to. He'll find his way around most any barrier or deterrent and into many a hidden hideout if the curiosity strikes him. Team Rocket couldn't be stopped so quickly if Red hadn't uncovered their secret bases. It's remarkable, too, to find such a young person unafraid of a crime organization, let alone single-handedly breaking it apart. Any challenge of Team Rocket's, even ploys to sway him towards their side, Red fights.

It's ingrained in him that to be a good trainer means doing the right thing. No pokemon is evil in his eye, and in turn neither is he. If it means harder work playing for the good team, so be it (as long as no one is overworked, of course, because that's no good either). He's the type able to both receive advice and question it. He's not without skepticism, especially when he knows a suggestion has come from an unsavory character. As much as he initiates conversation, he doesn't actually talk much in return. He keeps his words short and precise, which is sometimes taken as blunt. He doesn't mean to offend anyone, though his honesty is seldom barred once he's provoked to speak.

Red is a driven young man, constantly seeking to improve even after becoming Champion of Kanto in a short time. He's been entered into the Hall of Fame forevermore, having emerged victorious from battles in every gym in Kanto, The Elite Four, and at last between himself and the former champion. Or champions, technically. Green was one step ahead there, too, but only for a few hours, tops.

Still, Red doesn't stop training for a day. In his world, there's no such thing as early retirement. His travels continue, going on into Johto as well as back around Kanto, until he finds a place for himself deep within the mountain that sits between the two lands, Mt. Silver. It's a perilous area, the terrain as dangerous and challenging as the wild pokemon that live there, if not more. And it's just want he needs!

He lives up there for at least a year, training deep in the Mountain until a new, younger trainer manages to fight their way up there to challenge him.

And win.

Red doesn't say a word in this battle; not when it begins, not when it's over, and he disappears in silence. It could be said he's encouraged to learn from the experience, though, since he just keeps training. When faced again, in the same spot as before, he's stronger and ready to see what's changed since the first time.

He’s practically glued to his team. Pikachu especially, an unrelenting loyalty held between them. Though it's a different story when it comes being attached to people. He’s quite the rolling stone in his pursuit of badges, and following those successes, he lives in almost total seclusion when he's older. The companionship of his pokemon is enough to allow him to withstand life on a mountain peak, nearly cut off from the world below him. Whether or not he ever goes home to check in with his mother, or Professor Oak, or Green (who he seems to have grown on better terms with again), or any of his other friends, no one's telling. Certainly not Red himself, since social obligations just aren't his strong point anymore.

He's made a name for himself in history, as a force that shouldn't be underestimated. But he's not without his share of losses, either. In his youth they affected him terribly. If every member of his team goes down, he seems to shut everything out until he can see them all safe again. Professor Oak comments on the day Red becomes champion, that he did so thanks to the love and trust he shares with his pokemon. Unrelenting towards an opponent, his relationship with his team is nearly opposite. He trusts them all with his life, treats them well, but keeps them ready for anything. With their help he's traveled land and sea.

He's reached for the sky, and Mt. Silver is a great place to do just that. Staying up there the way he does, it can give a vibe that he's got a lofty attitude when really it's untrue. Even as champion, he's the last person to rub his title in anyone's face. He sets himself apart to challenge himself. He never denies a battle as though someone's not good enough for him, eager to see what an opponent's got. In exchange, he gets to learn from both his victories and losses (though the latter are less common occurrences).

Red's quiet nature is a defining trait, simply because he's constantly watching and listening, for the difference in what people say and their action taken, for how things work, and what they mean. Despite this, for all his observance, there are some things he simply hasn't grasped, or maybe lost a grasp on so focused on battle instead. Like the value of coming down the mountain sometime to say hello, or at least call his mother (this is an aspect of him she appears to accept, if not fully understand. She's proud of him, but worries for his welfare.). An open book Red is most certainly not. People are sometimes alarmed by how differently he looks compared to how he battles, or simply ask that he not give them such a penetrating stare as he sometimes does. He can center on his goals intensely, but not so much that he loses sight of the big picture. While working towards one goal, he's willing to take time to look at other things along the way.

Red suits the role of a quiet sort of hero; unafraid of danger, happy to banish evil and ill-will. And in ways, he's untouchable. Red's values and actions define much of who he is. In his youth he had the heart and will to shine as a trainer. But as he's grown, he's become quieter and more reserved, still gaining knowledge of a world around him that constantly evolves, if at a steadier, focused pace.

FIRST-PERSON SAMPLE:

[What looks to be a Tribal Grappler has made himself a seat on a spare crate outside of a shop. He sits around for a while, people watching. and later playing with the different apps on his relic. He can't get over how amazing the screen is despite the device's odd appearance overall. But other than that he still hasn't found the info he's looking for on it. Eventually he actually talks. If more to himself than anyone.]

This still doesn't say where they are....

[Where is his real party, he'd like to know.]

THIRD-PERSON SAMPLE: (From the setting of [community profile] magicdrafted)

Learning to fight by his own power is a very new concept. Red's hardly got the body of a fighter, though he's in shape from years of walking and biking. It helps to have that endurance in a place like this, where he must dodge and duck and swing his wand arm forward, to protect against anything that comes his way from his opponent.

He doesn't say a word during the entire duel, but it's visible in bright red eyes that he's practically screaming in his head.

Vermillious!

A flash of red lightning flies from his wand, and gets reflected in the dark eyes of the yellow creature watching the exchange from the sidelines. It's anxious, pacing with a crackle of nervous static at his cheeks.

Red takes a chance to shoot it a glance, 'no'. It's difficult for the both of them. Red doesn't quite hit his target in his distraction, and he's nearly hit by another blast before he makes a hasty roll aside.

He's got a lot to learn here, but that's never been a problem before. Because he'll find a way to win, and this duel isn't over.

CHARACTER NAME: Dark Pit ("Pittoo")
SERIES: Kid Icarus: Uprising
CANON POINT: Post game
APPEARANCE: Pittooy!
DESIRED CLASS & REASONING: Adept Rogue, Twin Blade/Steam Gunner. Like Pit, Dark Pit is highly adaptable, and has been shown to be knowledgeable in the use of many weapons. In addition, most weapons in his game can be used for both long range and melee, and this is especially true of the two weapons Dark Pit uses the most: his own staff (aptly named Dark Pit's Staff), and the Silver Bow. The staff in particular is best used for sniping (which he's used to take pot shots at Pit) and even looks similar to something a Steam Gunner would equip, and the Silver Bow can be taken apart and used as two blades.

[personal profile] stolemylook 2012-05-14 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
PERSONALITY: When Pit looked into the Mirror of Truth as he was sending an almighty flying kick in its direction, the reflection of what was in his heart was born. For someone that looks as badass as Dark Pit does, you would think he was completely and unforgivably evil. However, since the original Pit destroyed the Mirror of Truth at just the right moment, the cloning process was not properly completed. Although Dark Pit's disposition isn't sunshine and rainbows like his original, he still retains his sense of justice; he very well knows that the forces of the Underworld are the bad guys, and has no issues with busting some monsters.

That's pretty much where the similarities end, though he does have a bit of Pit's sense of humor and all of his arrogance. Dark Pit is much more serious than his counterpart; when he has a job to do, he does it, and without the song and dance and ridiculousness that Pit displays. He does seem to be a bit smarter than his original, though that might just because he thinks things through more. Sometimes he doesn't, like when he was so flustered from Pit trying to thank him for saving his life that he jumped off a platform, forgetting he couldn't fly anymore. Dark Pit also much more aggressive, and isn't afraid to take cheap shots when he has the opportunity to, like when he sucker punched Pit after the two of them defeated Pandora. On that note, he doesn't hate his original, despite the fact that Pit's happy-go-lucky attitude seems to get on his nerves. He more considers Pit a rival of sorts, which is why he doesn't have issue with taking cheap shots at him when the opportunity presents itself.

Dark Pit doesn't babble as much as Pit does, usually keeping what he has to say short and to the point, and he usually comes off as rude. The brain to mouth filter doesn't seem to exist on him, as he's not afraid to speak his mind, going so far as to call Palutena and Viridi idiots at one point (and he truly believes that all gods and goddesses are idiots for starting wars and getting innocent people caught up in them, not just those two).

One thing he prides himself on is his independence. Where Pit proudly proclaims himself a servant of Palutena, Dark Pit scoffs at the idea of working for anyone other than himself, and calls Pit a dog for blindly following someone else. Though at this point in his canon he doesn't mind lending a hand, especially in Skyworld games like Light VS. Dark, he has not actually declared allegiance to any of the gods or goddesses. This kind of attitude is not going to be changing any time soon, and he probably wouldn't take kindly to the fact that he has to join a guild in order to have a decent place to sleep.

Not much really seems to bother Dark Pit, and he comes off as sounding fairly indifferent during most of the events in his game (though getting beaten up by his original is enough to make him yell), but the one thing that pisses him off is the nickname that Palutena chose for him: Pittoo, which was later adapted into "Pittooy" by Hades. Seriously, he hates it. Don't call him that. Never call him that.
stolemylook: (I'm not like that guy.)

FIRST-PERSON SAMPLE:
[It never seemed to fail; where ever he ended up, golden boy wasn't that far behind him. Still, while they were out of reach of Skyworld, he should at least act civil, right?]

Hey, Pit.

[...and of course that idiot had to respond by yelling out, "Pittoo". Seriously, he was going to strangle Palutena for putting that nickname in his original's empty head. Still, civil! He had to think civil. Think civil...]

[...hell with it.]

[Dark Pit got a running start, heading straight for Pit. His other half seemed to get the idea at the last moment, because he turned, flailing as he tried to get away. That didn't stop him from flinging his legs out in a flying kick that landed square on Pit's ass. The white angel went tumbling head over heels as his dark side landing neatly on the ground.]

Don't. Call me. Pittoo!

[He paused, glancing at the double daggers that were flopping around at Pit's sides as he eventually rolled to a stop.]

And you're still ripping off my look? Can't you come up with something original for a change?
THIRD-PERSON SAMPLE:
The NPCs had warned him that this area was far too dangerous for someone of his level. He hadn't thought much of it, of course; what the hell was a level supposed to be anyway? It wasn't like you could level up and get stronger in Angel Land or anything -- weapons did that when you fused them, not people themselves.

Right now, though, surrounded as he was by various creatures, he was starting to get the idea that maybe he should have listened.

Dark Pit reached up with the back of his hand, clinging tightly to one of his daggers, wiping the sweat from his forehead. One of him, half a dozen of them, and they had already beat him up fairly well. His other arm was still sporting a nasty gash from where one had gotten a little too close (though if this was a game too, he wasn't entirely sure how the heck that was even possible; he certainly never got this beat up against Underworld troops). A brief moment passed, and he flicked the sweat off the back of his hand, before striking a combat pose.

"C'mon, uglies!" he shouted, psyching himself up for the fight that was about to come. "I'll take on all of you at once!"

His wings snapped, feathers quivering in anticipation. The monsters seemed confused by his sudden boldness, but then went for him anyway, obviously deciding the risk was worth the reward. Not that Dark Pit wasn't going to try and disappoint them; the first monster that reached him was met with a dagger to the face, while the second received a similar treatment. The third was coming at him fast, and he leapt up, coming down on the critter's head in a move that would make Mario proud. He bounced off that one to land on the head of the next, and then flung his daggers, nailing the last two in the gut.

He sprung off the monster's head, snapping his leg back to give it a sharp kick for good measure, before coming back to the ground, out of breath. After a moment to collect his breath, he moved to grab his weapons, before he heard a growl behind him, making him stop cold. His feather bristled in disbelief, turning around to see the number of monsters had doubled, a number of them licking their lips hungrily. He was seriously starting to think there was a Mirror of Truth around and no one told him.

Dark Pit reached down, ripping his daggers out of the monsters from before, letting out a deep breath, before charging forward once again.

CHARACTER NAME: Asuka Langley Soryu
SERIES: Neon Genesis Evangelion (anime)
CANON POINT: After she rematerializes beside Shinji at the conclusion of End of Evangelion.
APPEARANCE: Here! Wasn't able to find any decent official art of her with the bandages, so this'll have to do. The only difference not pictured is that you can see a little bit of the plugsuit's arms so they're not entirely bare, but they're otherwise mostly eaten away.

[personal profile] stupidshinji 2012-05-14 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
DESIRED CLASS & REASONING: I think Asuka would be a good fit for the Flick Reaper. Evangelions are mostly melee-oriented robots, so that's the sort of combat she's accustomed to. Asuka also makes use of an axelike weapon in Unit 02, similar to Flick Reapers. In addition, the fact that very few Flick Reapers have made a name for themselves in the world is right up Asuka's alley – she likes being one of the chosen elite. They seem like a very mobile class, a perfect fit for her quick-footed style. Asuka is even vulnerable to ranged attacks, just like a Flick Reaper, as she ultimately meets her end thanks to several lances thrown into her torso from a distance.

PERSONALITY: If the mouthful of a name didn't tip you off, Asuka Langley Soryu is not a face easily forgotten. Brandishing a seemingly impenetrable ego and a legendarily ferocious temper, Asuka is one of the most recognizable faces in Evangelion – which is even more remarkable considering just how famous Evangelion is overall. Arguably the poster child for the tsundere trope now commonplace in mainstream anime, Asuka steals the show whenever she's onscreen with her fiery personality, and she'll make damn sure you remember it, too. Hmph!

We're first introduced to Asuka at sea, where a fleet of military ships are escorting her Evangelion, Unit 02, across the waters. Her initial meeting with infamous protagonist Shinji Ikari sets the stage for one of the rockiest romances of all time (if you could even call it that, considering it's never actually consummated in any significant way). Asuka is distinctly unimpressed with Shinji right off the bat, sniping that he's “not much to look at”, and her view of him doesn't fare much better as the series progresses. Asuka is quick to blame Shinji for anything and everything that goes wrong, even when it's not particularly his fault. Her jealousy flares over Shinji's unnaturally high test scores with his Evangelion and superior performance in battle, and even though she continually accuses him of being an unworthy pilot, this envy becomes clear when she sarcastically remarks that wonderful, amazing Shinji will always come charging in to save the day. Yet despite her confrontational attitude towards Shinji, romantic feelings begin to emerge; the episode after she's introduced, she sneaks into Shinji's room to sleep beside him when she thinks he's unconscious. Asuka eventually goads Shinji into kissing her, and while her reaction during the scene might make the audience believe she's nothing short of disgusted, we find out later she was only upset because Shinji refused to hold her. They bicker constantly during the series, and poor, unfortunate Shinji winds up further contributing to Asuka's abandonment issues that have plagued her since her mother's traumatic death.

Asuka doesn't get along with Rei Ayanami, the pilot of Unit 00, very well, either. Rei's robotic responses unnerve Asuka, and like with Shinji, she is quick to become annoyed should others praise the blue-haired pilot in her presence. She picks on Rei for being the commander's favorite, and snidely refers to her as “Wonder Girl”. Asuka compares her to a doll, which she loathes – after her mother lost her mind, she mistook a doll for her real daughter until she finally hung herself – and angrily declares her hatred for her, along with everyone else, by the end of the series. In examining her relationships with her fellow pilots, it becomes clear that Asuka has a nasty jealousy streak. She demands to be the center of attention at all times, even going as far to hit on men over twice her age to get it, and when she doesn't, she throws a fit. Asuka thrives on recognition from others and pilots the Evangelion solely because of this, which Rei calls her out on. Incredibly self-absorbed and short-sighted, Asuka will charge foolishly at an enemy without thinking things through first. She's capable of strategizing when necessary, but always seem to prefer the glory of the limelight to an efficient victory. While she is fairly talented as a pilot, her hot-headed tendencies often land her in trouble, and she loathes the idea of having to work as a team to defeat the Angels. Though she lauds herself as an “elite pilot”, in reality, she may very well be the worst of the trio, due to her poor attitude and insistence on accomplishing everything on her own.

Of course, as with all characters in Evangelion, there are reasons for her standoffish behavior. Asuka's father was generally distant, and her mother absorbed herself in her work, leaving little time for Asuka. After a contact experiment with Unit 02 which left her soul sealed inside, Asuka's mother went insane and was hospitalized. During her hospitalization, she neglected Asuka in favor of a doll, and even insulted her. When Asuka proudly rushed to visit her mother after being chosen as an Evangelion pilot, she found her hanging from the ceiling, dead. Asuka blocked this memory, but it resurfaces later when her mind is violated by Arael, the 15th Angel. Asuka's mother declaring her unwanted and unloved triggered an obsessive need in Asuka to be noticed, to prove herself to the world by piloting the Evangelion. Her overwhelming confidence, however, ultimately proves to be just a farce. Following Asuka's sink into depression after her encounter with Arael, we find out Asuka actually hates herself, magnified by her continued losses against the Angels. Her sync ratio with Unit 02 plummets until it is determined she is no longer a reliable pilot. Consumed with self-loathing and a hatred for everything and everyone around her, Asuka becomes catatonic, and even attempts to commit suicide. Only do the events of The End of Evangelion rouse her. When her mother's soul whispers words of encouragement to her in Unit 02, proving that she had been protecting her all along, Asuka regains her spirit and makes a heroic last stand against the attacking military forces and the monstrous mass-produced Evangelions. Though she ultimately falls in defeat, she is the first to rematerialize beside Shinji at the conclusion of the movie. Only those who had the will to live could do so, thus confirming her desire to live in a world filled with other people despite the pain associated of growing close to them.

In summary, there's certainly a lot more to Asuka than meets the eye, to borrow an overused phrase. Cocksure and proud on the surface and fatally fragile underneath, Asuka's damning condescension of others contradicts her ultimate desire: to be loved. Her Evangelion is essentially an extension of herself; without it, she is unable to reconcile her self-worth. Her fate in the ongoing Rebuild of Evangelion movies is unknown, but regardless, Asuka remains one of the most memorable females in anime, probably because beneath all those layers of confidence she is just as human as the rest of us.

FIRST-PERSON SAMPLE: [ It's raining.

It's always been raining in Asuka's world, ever since the time those things violated her, when they'd stolen her vision, her limbs, and the few sacred things left after her mind was finally shattered, but she doesn't mind it. She leans on the hilt of her axe, one good eye surveying her surroundings, searching for an easy kill. Player or monster didn't matter; whatever netted a fast, easy reward was just fine.

That's when she sees them. Hobbling along, breathing heavily, about to collapse. A grin spreads across her face. Perfect.

She rushes the stumbling player before they even have time to turn their head, twirling her weapon elegantly and unleashing a mighty shockwave that sends them flying backward with a shrill cry. They hit the ground hard, and a flash of brilliant red stains where they fell.

Red. She hates that color now, wishes she'd never have to look at it again, but it's satisfying at the same time. Rewarding that it's happening to someone else and not her. Her axe glows with every Wicked Strike, and just like that, it's already over. The rise and fall of her fellow player's chest ceases, eyes frozen forever in that moment of fear, that moment they realize they're done for. ]

Sorry, kid. Nothing personal.

[ And it really wasn't. Just survival of the fittest, a result of the food chain. Food. Just as she'd been for those hideous harpies, tearing her to shreds. Asuka strides over and rummages through what's been left behind, trinkets, bits and bobbles. Ultimately, nothing worth taking. She sighs in frustration and turns her back on the corpse, gazing out over the horizon. Maybe the monsters would prove better fare today. ]

C'mon. [ She's not sure when she started talking to her weapon, but it's a small source of comfort in the absence of Unit 02. Her feet sink heavy into the mushy ground as she follows the scent of a stream. ] Let's go.

[ Where she was going, what she was doing, she wasn't quite sure anymore, but living was better than dying at any rate. And so long as she was stuck here, in this world without Evas and Angels, she'd make the most of things. After all, she still was the great Asuka Langley Soryu – except maybe not so great anymore, but it's a thought she shoves to the back of her mind as she wanders off wherever the field will take her. ]

THIRD-PERSON SAMPLE: (The following scene is set in Asuka's canon during episode 16, after Shinji is consumed by Leliel. It was also used in an application for Asgard.)

“I wonder...

Do you only pilot an Eva for the praise from others?”

Asuka turned on the side of her blanket and glared hatefully at the wall, as if the very act could summon that damned doll from nowhere and turn her into putty. I should've hit her, she thought, shifting again, attempting to get comfortable even though everything was so terribly unsettling and uncomfortable and empty that she knew full well she'd never get to sleep. Should've slapped her, for all the good it would've done. It wouldn't bring Shinji back. Nothing would. And no matter how much she tried to convince herself she didn't give a damn, that the stupid showoff got what he deserved, she couldn't get him out of her head, couldn't shake him from her mind.

“That idiot,” Asuka muttered under her breath, biting her lip and shoving a pillow over her face to keep from sniffling. “Why'd you have to go and do something so stupid? I... we...”

...need you.

“...ugh!”

The pillow went flying at the same spot that had earned her ire, her fist clenching and pounding furiously into the straw mat beneath her body. Why was she sobbing over this, anyway? She didn't need him or anyone else. She could handle the Angels by herself. She'd beat them, and then everyone would see how useless Shinji and Wonder Girl both were, how she should've been the leader all along, and then maybe Misato would finally let her use her grown-up perfume, and Kaji would finally pay attention to her, and the Commander would stop drooling all over Ayanami, and...

Yeah, in a perfect world, Soryu.

In a perfect world, she wouldn't have nightmares, wouldn't have doubts, wouldn't have anything but the applause of her adoring fans. There goes Asuka, isn't she something? Saving the world again, like it's no big deal. What a hero! What a hottie! What a–

“What a joke.”

Curling into herself, Asuka let the tears fall. No one could see them, anyway, and even if they did, who would care? Who would bother? In a perfect world, she wouldn't have nightmares, wouldn't have doubts, but more importantly, wouldn't be alone and wouldn't be abandoned, but paradise was far from reality, where everything could shatter in an instant. She'd given up on finding it a long time ago, given up on hope and everything associated with it, because what was even the point? Piloting Eva, facing those monsters, what did it even matter?

“Shinji, I... really hate you... Shinji...”

She cried – silently, just in case Misato was still awake – until she couldn't anymore, and finally fell asleep, the bitter sound of his name on her lips.

CHARACTER NAME: Davesprite
SERIES: Homestuck
CANON POINT: While playing the Ghost Busters II MMO after Intermission 2
APPEARANCE: Mr. Orange Creamsicle
DESIRED CLASS & REASONING: Blade Brandier

Davesprite's weapon of choice is naturally the sword because it's what his Bro trained him to use. He's also pretty fast, and prefers being free to move. It's also within his personality to defend the people he cares about.

PERSONALITY: The best place to start is his similarities with Alpha Dave. First, being cool and ironic is a huge thing. He thinks he's the coolest person around. Really, he's kind of a huge dork. Davesprite idolizes his older brother because, to him, his brother is the coolest person on the planet, and also the strongest. He's taught to not show much in the way of emotion, but sometimes it slips, such as when he accidentally kills a crow at his apartment. No one must ever know. Davesprite's also pretty laid-back, taking things at his own pace. Like Dave, it can be hard to tell whether he's being sincere or being ironic. He also has about as good of a memory as him, which is to say that he's sometimes pretty shitty at remembering things (once Alpha Dave forgot he could even time travel). One final similarity is his determination to protect his friends, willingly going back in time to ultimately erase his timeline from ever happening to save them.

Alright, let's get down to the differences. It needs to be established that due to time shenanigans, Davesprite is technically four months older than Dave. That's because he needed to learn as much as he could about Sburb and practice with his Timey Wimey Stuff before going back in time to prevent his timeline from ever happening. He cares a great deal about his friends, since even though his timeline will cease to exist, Jade and John will still be alive. After gaining access to the knowledge Sprites get, he's supposed to be cagey about whatever info he gives to Dave, but he says he "doesnt feel like it."

Davesprite is also more bitter than Dave is. This is mostly seen during his conversation with the Rose from his timeline. However, it's also been seen subtly based on word choices in the alpha time. Really, it's not hard to see why he is. His best friend got murdered, in turn killing his other best friend, and when he saves him John seems to see him as "other Dave." Not to mention the only other person from his timeline, Rose, doesn't quite remember much of it, and is metaphorically dead to him. Adding insult to injury, when Davesprite goes to help Bro out with a fight with Jack Noir, it ultimately fails with Bro dead and himself severely injured.

This leads into another difference with his alpha self. His identity, perhaps the only thing from his timeline that he has left. He appears to tolerate being called Davesprite. However, he doesn't like being called "other Dave." He may well hate it. Davesprite has given John a small piece of his mind for calling him this, and to the reader would have appeared greatly upset by it.

FIRST-PERSON SAMPLE:

[Man oh man, it's one thing to be playing a MMO. It's another thing entirely to actually be part of one. Again.

On the other hand, Davesprite has his everything from the waist down back to something more human. That is definitely an improvement. And he gets bonus wings, so now it's like he's some sort of weird angel with orange feathers.]

I had to have died. That's the only fuckin' possibility. I somehow died while playin' that shitty Ghostbusters game and went to steampunk heaven.

[He sighs and shrugs. There's not much he can do about it if that's the case. The best thing he can do is get some information. That there are even people around after a year of only seeing two godly humans is…pitiful, to say the least. He's happy to have a break from salamanders and nakodiles and other sprites and shit.

Wow Davesprite's getting really sidetracked over here. He's just…gonna go walk up to a person.]

Sup. Where do I sign up as God's personal secretary? Obviously, it's my new role in existence if I've got fuckin' angel wings outta my back like a kid who got spliced with goddamn bird genes as a baby.

character.
CHARACTER NAME: Roberto
SERIES: Suikoden Tierkreis
CANON POINT: Following Dirk’s death, before going to Rarohenga.
APPEARANCE: Here
DESIRED CLASS & REASONING: Blade Brandier—Roberto favours the black blades that the Blades of Night’s Veil use; they are katana-like in appearance and are one-handed.

PERSONALITY: Roberto, first off, may appear as terse and often sharp-tongued with other people, even if he sometimes doesn’t mean to come across that way. It’s just his general demeanour. He’s straightforward to a fault and often thick-headed when it comes to how people may react to what he’s going to say, not taking into consideration things before they come out of his mouth. As a result, it leads to him being scolded or reprimanded by either Meruvis or Chrodechild, the latter of whom he greatly idolises. A lot of the time, he appears short-tempered and agitated, and seems to take many things quite seriously even where he probably shouldn’t.

It likely stems from the events that brought about the Blades of Night’s Veil.

That is, the Order of the One True Way took over Astrasia. At that time, Roberto wasn’t a knight (merely a vassal to another one) and couldn’t fight for his kingdom and, driven by frustration at his inability to act and protect what was important to him, became very serious in order to train and become a member of the Blades of Night’s Veil. And he did; he was the youngest to become one, besides Chrodechild herself. This seriousness has carried on, part of his character, as well as his loyalty to Chrodechild, the other Blades, and to his homeland.

He’s a very proud person, not quick to apologise or thank others. He’s proud of himself, of what he’s accomplished with his own strength and whom and what he fights for. If anyone says anything bad about Astrasia, the Blades of Night’s Veil or Chrodechild, well, they have Roberto to answer for. He’s bordering on arrogant, yes, and should he view someone as below him he will sometimes talk down to them, at least until he gets to know them and can warm up a bit. Such as in the case when he first met Sieg, scornful of his not knowing Chrodechild was a princess and even calling him and his company (numerous times) hayseeds.

He will be polite to those of higher rank and whom he has a respect for—such as Chrodechild, Fredegund or other members of the Blades or people from Astrasia. However, his respect is not easily given. Even though Sieg is the leader of his company, Roberto doesn’t give him respect until later on, until the other boy shows initiative and his strength in helping them and others. It takes a while to earn his respect, but once someone has it, Roberto’s loyalty and strength will be on their side without fail. There is little that he won’t do for those people whom he cares for, even though he isn’t the best at showing he cares.

He’s quickly brought to anger or exasperation and will often take people too seriously. He’s is also prone to being very defensive and snapping out of embarrassment at being caught not being honest about how he really feels. It also doesn’t help that he’s no good at hiding it—he’ll say one thing, and his expression will show something completely different. Like his saying there was no choice for them but to join the company, and then it getting pointed out that he looked pretty happy about it. He’s always quick to try and deny such things, even though he usually can’t as well as he’d probably like.

Roberto doesn’t think much of the time before he goes rushing into things, and can land himself in unfavourable situations. He doesn’t make as good of a leader because of this, even though he does aspire to be more like Chrodechild (and later Sieg). He doesn’t realise, for instance, that Danash is attempting to manipulate the Blades and Sieg’s company into competing with one another until after he’s already lashed out at Sieg. Though, he does eventually come to realise and complains about this to himself, disappointed that he was the one fooled while Sieg was not. His emotions can be a weakness for him, as they can be manipulated and guide him, in the same such a way as they are a strength to drive him toward his goals.

Not to say that he’s entirely temperamental most of the time. He is perfectly capable of acting level-headed in situations and even expressing his gratitude to others. (But it doesn’t help when people like Sieg say he’s acting weird when he’s being so sincere.) He also has a strong sense of justice and honour, to the point of wanting to go and defend the Furious Roar from Order attacks after they’d reclaimed Pharamond solely because he’d never had a chance to apologise to Cougar to how he’d acted.

FIRST-PERSON SAMPLE:

[The vrr of the device in his hand is entirely unfamiliar and Roberto glowers down at it, and similarly glowers at the Chaos Gate before him. His sword is missing, his other possessions as well, not even to mention his armour and no matter how he looks about he can’t find them.

Touch me the device reads.]

Yeah, right. [Roberto scoffs and shoves it back into a pocket. He shifts uncomfortably, feeling exposed in the clothes that are entirely unfamiliar to him. Where is he? Did he sleepwalk into another world or something? He couldn’t remember, and he didn’t know why his clothes were changed.

He scowls and turns to survey the area. He can see people coming and going. Fine. He’ll just seek out answers for himself. With quick, precise steps he makes his way outside, outside where there are more people. His eyes scan over them. Then,]
Hey, you! I’ve got something to ask you! [Courtesy? What’s that?]

THIRD-PERSON SAMPLE:
The field area stretched out before him, sky dyed by the orange hues of sunset. But Roberto wasn’t paying attention to the beauty, how scenic the landscape was or otherwise. No, what he was concentrating on was the slice of his sword through the monster before him. Satisfaction swelled up deep in his chest and he sheathed his weapon with a brisk jerk of his hand, his chin tilted up proudly. A breeze ruffled at his hair and carried smells to him as he took a moment to let tense muscles relax.

—still, though. He wasn’t strong enough yet to access his own weapons, his armour and his possessions. And that made his hand grip tighter around the hilt of the sheathed sword, his expression growing stormy as he walked, ground crunching under his feet. It reminded him of Astrasia, when they’d been driven out. The situation more than the place he was in, of course. The frustration he’d felt, trying to train and earn his place among the Blades of Night’s Veil. He’d been weak then, little more than the hayseed he thought Sieg was when he’d first met him.

“Hmpth.” His nose wrinkled. He was comparing himself to Sieg… Oh, how the mighty ones fall.

He was thrust right into that position of trying to fight, to become stronger, aspiring to grasp something still beyond his reach with a discomfiting desperation and a feeling of being completely out of his element. He didn’t get this place yet, he didn’t understand it, but if he had to get up to a certain level or whatever he’d train until he got there. He had to. His pride wouldn’t allow him to do anything less. No matter if Chrodechild or Meruvis weren’t here! He would uphold the honour of the Blades of Night’s Veil and of the kingdom of Astrasia until he saw them once more.
