character. CHARACTER NAME: Princess Hitei (Hiteihime) SERIES: Katanagatari CANON POINT: after episode 12 APPEARANCE: like this but her hair has been cut shorter since the final episode, and she wears a mask-- wait let me just get another image to cover her neck upwards. here you go. Note that the X-markings around her neck seem to be either a bizarre family trait or a traditional Shikizaki tattoo, as her ancestor has them too. DESIRED CLASS & REASONING: Macabre Dancer; straight off, Hiteihime has absolutely no physical ability whatsoever. She spends most of her time lounging around her palace plotting and ordering her bodyguard to go out and actually do all the fighting. And she doesn't mind that. Her weapons are her brain, her wit, and her ability to alter events from the sidelines. A caster role is required, clearly. Her series theme is the rose - they're everywhere on her clothing and belongings - so it seems fitting for her to be a class known as the Flower of the Battlefield. She is also accustomed to using a fan for gestures and dramatic movements. She already has a tendency to partner herself with a strong physical fighter for protection, providing the brains and the money behind whatever they're doing, so it isn't that great a leap.
PERSONALITY: Hiteihime. 'Princess Denying'. She's exactly what it says on the tin. Her theme, her fundamental character trait, is her denial of everything around her; deny history, deny the people around you, deny your own past. Deny what you said a minute ago, if it suits your whim. Even her name is an alias, but her true name is lost in the annals of time and she doesn't really care enough to keep it. She's fundamentally fickle, dismissing anything she grows bored of, but she's also perverse and contrary - she'll change a plan just to irritate a co-conspiritor. "It would be interesting to see the plan succeed... But it would also be interesting to see it fail. So I don't care either way," is her stance on it. Even so, she is tenacious, sticking to one cause for years even if she lost interest in the final few yards and it ultimately failed. She doesn't care - she survived, which is more than most of those involved can say.
She's clever - very clever, for a princess confined to a palace within the shogunate for most of her life - and she's cunning, with a quick, cruel tongue and a knack for insults. She can seem childish, sometimes, especially in her sense of humour, but she's anything but. A chaotic neutral entity, if you will, who changes mood and demeanour on a whim, and one used to having to find competent allies to do her work for her due to her station and social limitations. Her curiosity and appetite for information is vast. For a women kept immobile, information and money are her two weapons, and she has mastered them.
Disliking those who can outwit her, she also sees them as worthy rivals, and generally ends up feeling strongly for them. Her only true rivals are, by the time she arrives in the World, dead and gone, and she has emerged victorious. In a way, she's grown out of that game, but that's not to say she won't pick it up again if the opportunity presents itself. Those less cunning than her become pawns or pets, or merely stepping stones along her current route. Not that she doesn't like them. She's often affectionate or helpful, in her own way, even if she'll deny it afterwards, and she's generally pleasant and cheerful to strangers... But, well. It's when you get to know her that her sharp wit might cut you. Think of her like a cat. It's when she draws close to you that you come in range of her claws.
Another note is that she comes from a long line of soothsayers. Although she does not - as far as she's willing to say - possess any powers of foresight herself, she has access to the prophecies and recordings of thousands of years of her family. Her opinion of history and the flow of time is a tad warped. She has unnatural knowledge of the future... as seen from feudal Japan. So, not that useful once she's in another world, really, but at least she has a solid base of knowledge to work from, and one that will likely morph into cheery curiosity.
THIRD-PERSON SAMPLE: The duality of her life had disappeared. Whereas before there had been 'actions that furthered the plan of Shikizaki' and 'actions that obstructed it', there was now only the day-to-day humdrum of the road, wayside restaurants, and the occasional scuffle. Shichika ignored her and her chatter for the most part - but then, she was used to talking to someone with no expression, with no measurable response whatsoever. She chattered anyway. She laughed, and smiled. She felt lighter, younger.
Lighter, ha. It wasn't just a spiritual alleviation, either. Her hair had gone from a groomed weight down her back to curls almost as short as that hateful woman's absurd bob now, looping around her ears in a girlish way that took a decade away from her age. If asked, Hitei would most definitely deny that she enjoyed it, even as she carefully arranged curls to fall more pleasingly around her face each morning. It wasn't even as though she had anyone to please. Her hair would never live up to his dead lover's, just as his companionship could never live up to the silent smile of a dead ninja. She did it for herself, just as she did everything for herself nowadays.
No plan. No duality. Nothing to deny, other than her old rank and importance, her heritage. She checked the map again, and marked down the next inn that they would be able to afford, before passing it to Shichika. They would eat well, if they survived the journey.

She laughed again, for no reason at all.
